Hospital Coverage. You are automatically enrolled in Part A and do not have to pay a monthly premium for this benefit. However, you do have a $1,132 deductible for inpatient hospital stays. This deductible may be charged multiple times per year.
Medical Coverage. When you turn 65 you are automatically enrolled in Part B. A monthly premium will begin being deducted from your social security the month you turn 65. You are also responsible for an annual deductible of $135. Depending on the Medicare plan you choose, you may be able to get you dedectible covered for you.
Medicare Advantage. Essentially Part C is a combination of Part A, B & D. It is important to note that if you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan you are no longer managed by Medicare - you are 100% covered by a private insurance company. In some instances this can be a good thing, in others it is not. For this reason, it is crucial that you speak with a licensed agent before choosing this type of plan.
Prescription Drug Coverage. While these plans are Medicare controlled, you do not go through Medicare to sign up for one. All Prescription plans are managed by private insurance companies. Please be aware that it is strongly recommended to sign up for a Part D plan even if you do not currently have any prescriptions. Starting in April following your birthday you will begin accumulating a 1% penalty per month for not having a Prescription Drug Plan.
